A pod of killer whales has been spotted at a popular Sydney beach in a very rare sighting.

The group of orcas were seen chasing humpback whales at Curl Curl Beach, in Sydney's Northern Beaches, on Thursday afternoon.

Photos uploaded to Instagram by local tourism operator Whale Watching Sydney, captured the moment the hunting pod pursued their prey.

'Our minds are well and truly blown today with the sighting of a huge orca pod,' the post read.

'There was a frenzy of activity and the orcas buzzed past the boat in formation'.

Social media users praised the impressive pictures that were taken of the creatures in their natural element.

'Incredible and fantastic shots!' one wrote.

'Insane! Omg so good!' another said.

Bizarre markings spotted on whale swimming off the Aussie coast

Killer whales are rarely sighted in Sydney waters.

The last time the creatures were seen near the city was in Botany Bay in 2018.

A group of killer whales were recently seen in Green Cape, near Merimbula, on the NSW south coast in July.

The creatures are usually found off Australia's east coast between June and October as humpbacks and other whales migrate north to warmer waters to give birth.

The mammals are sighted between January and April on the west coast, but spend much of the year in the colder waters around the Antarctic.

Orcas are the largest dolphin species in the world and they can weigh up to a 5,500kg and can reach up to 9.8metres in length.

The creatures are commonly known as  killer whales because of their size and predatory nature.
